Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to participate in the AFVentures Fellowship, an 8-week innovation immersion program with the private sector. When an Airman comes up with a great idea, it’s not very common for their first thought to be: “I should totally go tell public affairs about this!”

And why should it be? My career field’s knee-jerk response to new initiatives has largely been to speculate on the repercussions of what would happen if the media misconstrued the information.

But here’s the thing: As much as it can be discouraging to be questioned about something you care about, winning over the support of one of the Air Force’s master communicators can dramatically improve your chances of success.

Times are a-changing and people are increasingly aware of the challenges we’re facing as a species. As humans, we’re incredibly lucky to hold the ingenuity to create incredible innovations like the internet and shamwow, but also to solve problems on a scale beyond what often seems in our reach.

In the face of problems like deforestation, widespread air and water pollution, and climate change, now is the time to take action at the individual level to help prompt widespread social change.

Believe it or not, I was not the one who decided to go vegan in my household. Well, not initially. I had toyed with the idea in the past, but never really considered it an option. I still don’t really consider myself fully vegan because we still occasionally eat honey and do some other things die-hard vegans would banish me from their kingdom for.

Surprisingly, it was my husband who convinced me to go almost entirely plant-based with him. Last October, we were just sitting on the couch and, out of nowhere, he goes, “Let’s go vegan.” Honestly not sure…
